Overview
Perhaps no stretch of highway reaches further into America’s history than the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway and because of its nationally significant resources and story the Federal Highway Administration recently awarded the corridor the title All-American Road.
Its 72 miles of mostly two-lane roadway navigate nature’s beauty, history and serenity. The land and waters on either side of the byway have been part of the sweep of American history, nature, archaeology and recreation for nearly 500 years. The byway connects State Parks, National Monuments, stunning beaches, nature trails, boating, fishing, preserves and estuaries.
From the northern boundary of St. Johns County, the byway bisects the seaside luxury and golf mecca of Ponte Vedra Beach then weaves through America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, then through communities like Butler Beach, Crescent Beach and Marineland and eventually ending in Flagler County at the Gamble Rogers Memorial Park on Flagler Beach.
This is one of the premier byways for the history lover, as the whole town of St. Augustine is packed with historical sites dating from the Spanish conquest in the 1400s, up to the Civil Rights protests in the 1960s. New statues commemorate the civil rights leaders of that time near the market where, generations ago, slaves were sold.

General Directions
North to South: Fifteen minutes west of Interstate I-95, State Road 202 ends its eastern path. A right turn quickly leads to the beginning of Florida’s A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway at the St. Johns County line. The 72 miles ahead can take 90 minutes or a week. It all depends on the side trips taken. This guide takes you, mile by mile, through the nature, recreation, leisure and history along the Byway.
