Heritage Crossroads: Miles of History Scenic Highway
Byway Length: 98 Miles
Designated: November 19, 2008
FDOT District: 5
Overview
The segments of road and the communities that comprise this byway embrace the heritage of the people who built the region. For over 300 years, Native American tribes, European conquerors, colonists who settled in this region, and even pre-Interstate Highway era tourists have traveled the network of roads that make up the Heritage Crossroads: Miles of History Scenic Highway.
Students of history can find Indigenous settlement sites, preserved marching trails, and European encampments, with many of the back road sites relatively unchanged by time.
Travelers can hike, bike, or even drive on the “Old Brick Road” segment. This is one of Florida’s (and the nation’s) first significant roadways, completed around 1917!
